STATESBORO, Ga. --- Georgia Southern head softball coach Natalie Poole has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2008-09 season.
Joining the team next fall are Hanna Ennis, Marie Fogle, Hillary Martin and Reine Owens.
Ennis hit .419 in the fall for South Gwinnett High School. The 5-6 shortstop hit four home runs with 25 runs batted in and was named to the All-Gwinnett County Team for the second straight season in 2007. She lettered on SGHS's region championship team in 2005. The Snellville, Ga. native will be joining former high school teammates Sam Russo and Jenny Side on the GSU roster.
Fogle, a 5-6 utility player from Rincon, Ga., batted .454 in her senior campaign at Effingham County High School. The two-time all-state performer hit no less than .448 in any of her final three seasons and was a Wendy's High School Heisman nominee.
Martin is a 5-9 pitcher from Cumming, Ga. In four seasons she accumulated a 46-28 record for the Raiders and had just one season with an ERA higher than 1.31. She earned all-county recognition four times and all-region laurels three times. NFHS posted a 92-56 record in her four seasons and won three Forsyth County titles. She guided the Raiders to back-to-back fifth-place finishes in the AAAA in 2004-05 and a Region 6AAAA title in 2005.
Owens is a four-year letterwinner at Alpharetta High School and earned three team MVP honors. The 5-4 third baseman was named to three all-region teams and served as team captain in her senior season.
“The athletes that we have coming in are representative of the type of athlete we want at Georgia Southern, both in character and personality, and athleticism," said Poole. "I think they are going to difference makers here and will fit in at this school and also this program. We are very excited about it, just as much as they are, and we are looking forward to August getting here as quickly as possible.”
