STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern women's tennis team opened dual action play on Wednesday afternoon, falling 4-3 to nationally ranked Jacksonville University.
No. 70 Jacksonville (2-0) won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches to take the early advantage. The tandem of Kristi Kegerreis
(
Fairfax,
Va.) and
Christine Caforio (
Acworth, Ga.) fell 8-5 to Tatiana Soldatova and Iva Jaresova at the No. 1 doubles position.
Georgia Southern (0-1) claimed three victories in singles action at the one, two and four seeds respectively. Kegerreis defeated Lena Willi 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 slot, as the Eagles kept the match alive. Molly Maddox (Rome, Ga.) dropped Jaresova in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 position.
Freshman Melanie Rolle opened the season on a high-note at the No. 2 seed downing Soldatova. The Gainesville, Fla. native used three sets to defeat Soldatova. After dropping the first set 4-6, Rolle reeled off two consecutive set victories earning the triumphant win (4-6, 6-3, 6-2). It was the first victory of her collegiate career.
“I'm really proud of the way we fought,” said GSU women's tennis coach Amy Bonner. “We didn't quit after losing the doubles point and continued to improve as the match progressed. It's early in the season, but today was a good test to see where we're at against a strong opponent.”
The Eagles travel to Atlanta, Ga. this weekend to take on Samford and Georgia State. Saturday's match will be held at Lost Mountain Tennis Center in Powder Springs, Ga. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
