Men's Basketball Returns Home to take on Wofford

STATESBORO, Ga. --- The Eagles return home for the first time in two weeks to take on Wofford in a key Southern Conference matchup.
Georgia Southern (12-6, 5-3) plays just its second home game since Dec. 20. While the schedule was front-loaded with away games, GSU plays eight of its last 13 at Hanner Fieldhouse.
GSU split its two road contests, winning 67-57 at Elon and losing 88-81 to Appalachian State.
“I knew it would be a tough trip,” said head coach Jeff Price. “Elon was a good win for us - they've played people really close and were 5-3 in the conference going in, so it was a quality win for us. I thought we played pretty well. We got off to a slow start but played well and found a way to win by 10 points.”
The team's three game winning streak was snapped Saturday at App State who has won six straight and eight of nine.
“App is a team that right now is playing as good as anybody in the league and we knew that going in. They've had some big wins, both on the road and at home, and are shooting the ball very, very well. We had some costly turnovers - we only had 12 for the game - but they scored 10 out of those 12 turnovers and probably four of those were 3-point shots. And again, we had a slow start, and that's something we need to address and try to change. We split on the road and you always want to win both, but the bottom line is we're 3-3 on the road in the conference right now, we're 5-3 overall and have only played two home games.”
Attention is now turned to the Terriers (9-8, 2-5) who ended a three-game skid Saturday at The Citadel. Earlier this season Wofford won at Purdue.
“Standings don't mean anything when you get into conference play,” said Price. “Wofford's a very dangerous team - they're the top 3-point shooting team percentage-wise in the conference. They had 17 3's against Chattanooga and their guards are very good, they're experienced at guard and very talented. We're certainly going to have our hands full whether we're playing at home or not.”
According to Price Wofford boasts the best backcourt in the conference in Shane Nichols and Drew Gibson. Nichols averages 15.6 points per game, fourth-best in the league and shoots 43.5 percent from distance. Gibson, who runs the point, is third in the league in assists per game (5.20).
“I think that they have overall, probably the best guards in the league as a combination,” said Price. “They shoot the ball well, they're really quick off the dribble, and they're really talented. They're very similar to guards we've had here in the past, like Terry (Williams), Elton (Nesbitt), Julius (Jenkins) and Sean Peterson, those type of guards that can create and make plays.
“Any time you play teams that shoot the ball well from the perimeter you can run into problems because they can have one of those nights where they don't miss and if you lay down, and don't defend the perimeter and guard their shooters, that can happen.”
