ATHENS, Ga. - The Georgia Southern cross country team finished in sixth place at the Bulldog Stampede Invitational on Saturday morning hosted by the University of Georgia.
The Eagles placed sixth out of nine teams. Head Coach Natalie Smith was very proud of her team's performance as they went against a very competitive field competing against the likes of Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn and Miami.
“I was really happy with the way we ran,” said Smith. “I thought our girls competed well on a tough course and it's definitely going to get us ready for next weekend's meet. It was a great field of teams and those are the teams that we want to compete against.”
Senior Abby Bloom (Snellville, Ga.) was the first Eagle to cross the finish line in 31st place and a time of 19:56.44. Bloom has opened the season as Georgia Southern's first runner across the finish line in three consecutive meets. Sophomore Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) was the second Eagle to finish placing 45th with a time of 20:51.78. Right behind Fuller was junior Shauntel Jennings (Stone Mountain, Ga.) coming across in 20:56.79.
Freshman Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) finished in 55th place with a time of 21:53.59, and sophomore Kellie Wesson rounded out the pack crossing the finish line with a time of 24:06.65.
“The biggest thing for us is to get our gap time down,” said Smith. “We're going to use this weekend as a momentum builder to get ready for next weekends meet at Auburn.”
Georgia Southern returns to the course next Saturday at the Auburn Invitational.
