Eagles Pull Away from Fort Valley State

STATESBORO, Ga. --- The Georgia Southern men's basketball team finished the first half with an 18-4 run to pull away from Fort Valley State in a 93-73 victory Monday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.
GSU wins its seventh straight to improve to 7-1 on the season. The seven-game winning streak is the program's longest before January since 1950. The 7-1 start equals the best start after eight games since 1991.
The Eagles took the floor for the first time in nine days, dating back to Dec. 1, a victory over Appalachian State.
“I thought we looked like we hadn't played in nine days,” said GSU head coach Jeff Price. “I was concerned with that. Any time you have great momentum and have won six in a row and you have to take nine days off it's going to show. I just think we didn't play real hard to start the game but we woke up and held them to 36 points in the first half and I thought our second half was better.”
FVSU led by as many as six in the first seven minutes. With the score knotted up at 32-32, GSU reeled off seven straight points, capped off with a thunderous dunk from senior Anthony Marshall (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Junior Trumaine Pearson (Stuart, Fla.) began the run with two buckets.
“In the first half our reserves played better than our starters,” said Price. “That was a big key. We came out and walked around a lot early and we got some great play off the bench with Trumaine, A.J. (Antoine Johnson), Anthony and Krzysztof Janiszewski. Those guys came in and did some good things.”
Johnson totaled a career-high 14 points in just 13 minutes of action.
“A.J. just needs to play,” said Price. “He's going to produce when he gets minutes. There are some things he's got to do better but I thought he did well tonight.”
Senior Louis Graham (West Palm Beach, Fla.) tallied a team-high 16 points and freshman Willie Powers (Gainesville, Fla.) had 15.
For the Wildcats, Martrez Scott led all scorers with 18 points.
Next up for the Eagles is two-time defending national champion Florida. The two teams will play Saturday at 3 p.m. in Jacksonville. The game will be televised on SportSouth.
