Men's Basketball Set for Glenn Wilkes Classic

STATESBORO, Ga. --- With one game behind them, the Eagles now turn their attention to Cleveland State, their first opponent this weekend at the Glenn Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach.
Georgia Southern fell to its first-round opponent Florida State 92-67 Monday in Tallahassee. After a promising start, a tie game with six minutes remaining in the first half quickly turned into a 12-point halftime deficit and a 25-point defeat.
“I just think we need to continue to learn what type of team we are,” said head coach Jeff Price, “and it's going to take some games to do that. But eventually we're going to have to learn as a team what our identity is and how we need to play. We need to get off the 3-point line and get to the foul line more. That's the type of team we're going to have. After our transition we need to show more patience in the half-court and learn that this team is different than past teams and that's not a bad thing. That can be a good thing, but we just have to learn what type of team we are.”
Fifteen of the Eagles' 34 total rebounds Monday came on the offensive end. During the preseason Price emphasized the importance of becoming a strong team on the offensive boards.
“We offensive rebounded the ball very well. I kept pressing that we need to be a very good offensive rebounding team and I thought we got to the glass really well. It gives us more scoring opportunities and we need to continue to do that.”
After Cleveland State on Friday, GSU takes on UAB and former Indiana head coach Mike Davis. The GWC wraps up on Sunday with a clash against Stetson.
“We'll get a much better read for our team,” said Price on this weekend's opponents. “I said from the beginning it's hard to judge our team on playing an ACC school. There will be some very good teams - Cleveland State beat South Florida and UAB is really good. We'll have a better read on our team somewhat with the competition, but it's still really good competition and we're going to have to play well to have a chance to win.”
Four players reached double-figures Monday, including newcomers Willie Powers and Julian Allen. Powers scored a team-high-tying 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and saw 36 minutes of playing time in his first collegiate contest. Allen, a junior college transfer, tallied 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
“I thought our new guys were really good,” said Price. “Willie Powers stepped up as a true freshman in his first game and played with a lot of character and played like an experienced player. Julian Allen did well and did what we needed him to do and Trumaine Pearson came in and gave us some good minutes. I was very pleased with their play.”
The action Friday starts at noon. John Phillips will be on the mic providing the play-by-play. Friday and Sunday's games will be broadcast on 102.9 FM and Saturday's contest will be on 107.3 FM.
