Matt Greenhalgh serves as the strength & conditioning director for Georgia Southern football. The former college football player spent four years as the assistant director of strength &conditioning at Appalachian State University, where he was the lead assistant in the training of football and ran the strength program for baseball.
In his time at App, Greenhalgh aided in the transition of the football program from FCS to FBS culminating with three bowl victories and two Sun Belt Conference championships. Additionally, nearly 20 student-athletes that he worked with went on to receive NFL opportunities. Greenhalgh traveled with the baseball program and facilitated off-site training protocols while working with seven players who were drafted by the major league baseball organizations.
Over the course of his time at App he also was instrumental in the development of AppFuel and was tasked with monitoring the day-to-day operations of the strength & conditioning department. He helped to create two Fueling Stations for AppFuel that distributed pre- and post-workout nutritional supplementation to meet the needs of all 18 varsity teams. Greenhalgh was the internship coordinator responsible for the recruitment of interns as well as the creator and proctor of the internship curriculum. While at App, he played a large role in the growth of the department from six coaches to 10 prior to his departure. He also had stints training the field hockey, volleyball and wrestling programs.
Before App, Greenhalgh was a graduate assistant strength & conditioning coach at The Citadel from 2013-14, training the baseball team and assisting with football, wrestling and track & field. While at The Citadel he was responsible for the offensive and defensive linemen, as well as the development of the red-shirt athletes.
Greenhalgh interned with South Carolina’s football squad in 2012, working predominantly with the lineman including No. 1 overall NFL Draft selection Jadeveon Clowney. From 2012-13 he worked with the golf and tennis teams on top of contributing to all 16 of Rhode Island’s
sports while he completed his athletic eligibility.
Greenhalgh had a decorated career as an offensive lineman at Rhode Island from 2008-12 as a four-time letterwinner and was a four-year member of the CAA All-Academic Team. An active member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, he was one of 22 student-athletes nationally named to the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team honoring football players committed to making a difference in the community.Â
He received his bachelor’s degree in exercise science and psychology from URI in 2012 and his master’s degree in sport management from Western Carolina in December 2017. Greenhalgh is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCS) and College Strength and Conditioning Association (SCCC). He is married to the former Emily Shaw.
