When Georgia Southern resurrected the football program in 1981, traditions and spirit needed resurrection as well. So legendary Head Football Coach Erk Russell created his own. But inspiration came to him in the most unusual of places. Inspired by the gnat-infested drainage ditch that cut across the field between the team's locker room and practice fields, Russell convinced his players that its stagnant water was actually "Beautiful Eagle Creek," a source of "magical" waters.
Today, these fields serve as the practice facility for the football and soccer teams as they prepare for their contests. Located off Tillman Road, the practice fields at Beautiful Eagle Creek consist of three full fields, a shortened field for kicking, a sand pit for training, as well as the Herring Pavilion that provides shade on hot Statesboro days. An athletic training room is on site for medical needs, as well.
With a vast and open area, the area can be used as a conditioning area for all 17 teams, as well.
