Horne ties for low 54-hole total at prestigious event
AUGUSTA, Ga. - As the spring schedule begins to wind down, the Georgia Southern men's golf team continued its strong spring play, shooting a 17-under-par 847 in a loaded field at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club. Sophomore Thomas Horne shot three rounds in the 60s, including a career low in the final round, to tie for the low 54-hole score, as well.
In a field that featured eight teams in the top 50 in the country and six in the top 25, including #4 LSU, #5 Oklahoma State and #10 Illinois, the Eagles more than held their own.
The spring resume now includes a second-place finish at The Schenkel Invitational, a co-victory at The Johnnie-O and a strong result at a strong event this past weekend.
The Eagles opened the 36-hole day on Saturday with Horne and Trace Carter both going under par with a 69 and 71, respectively. In the day's second round, the squad shaved 21 strokes off their earlier effort to move up the leaderboard thanks to a 67 from Horne, a 68 from Morgan Blythe and a 70 from Harrison Sewell. A par of even-par 72 from Parker Claxton and Carter helped round out the -11 round.
On Sunday, Horne shot a career-low 65 to take second place in the prestigious event. As a team, all four scoring golfers shot even par or better to keep the Eagles in a strong place on the leaderboard. Claxton had his best round of the weekend, carding five birdies to shoot a 71 while Blythe and Sewell both shot 72s. All five Eagles birdied the ninth hole (the 18th on the day) to help the team pass #41 Northwestern. But the day belonged to Horne who posted four birdies on his first nine holes and then birdied three of his final four holes to take the clubhouse lead before finishing in a tie with UNC's Sihan Sandhu through regulation. After waiting for the field to finish, Sandhu and Horne went to a playoff with Sandhu claiming the trophy with a win on the third hole.
Horne's 201 is the fifth-lowest three-round total in program history and just the 20th time in program history an Eagle golfer has posted three rounds in the 60s for a single tournament. The 65 in his final round is the sixth-lowest single-round total in program history. There were 27 top-150 players in the field, including six of the top-30 golfer in the nation.
Georgia Southern played the Par 3s at -2 for the tournament, fourth-best in the field, and played the Par 5s at -22. The squad had 61 birdies, fifth-best in the field. Horne played the Par 3s at -7, the best in the field by three strokes, while Blythe played them at -2. Horne also led the field with 20 birdies .
The Eagles have now posted back-to-back 847s as a team, after shooting an 822 at the Johnnie-O, to continue a strong push to the finish.
Words From Coach Carter Collins: "Solid week in Augusta. We want to continue to push ourselves against the best in the country and they once again showed that we belong. A slow first round held us back from a top-five finish but the pieces are there. Thomas played incredible all week, especially birdieing three of the last four holes to get in a playoff. We kept building on the positive momentum this spring and can't wait for The Ford Collegiate. GATA!!"
