STATESBORO – Georgia Southern softball closed out day two of the Bash in the Boro Tournament with a pair of competitive matchups, falling to Eastern Illinois and Western Kentucky to move to 2-2 on the season.
vs. Western Kentucky (3-1)
The Hilltoppers edged the Eagles 1–0 Sunday afternoon in a tightly contested pitchers' duel at Eagle Field. Both teams leaned on strong performances in the circle, keeping the game scoreless through the opening frames.
Western Kentucky scratched across the game's lone run in the third inning, as shortstop Morgan Sharpe delivered a two-out RBI single to break the deadlock.
In the circle, senior Alana Barnard (0-1) was outstanding for Georgia Southern, allowing just two hits across 6.2 innings of work. Despite her efficient outing, Barnard was tagged with the loss in the low-scoring affair.
Offensively, the Eagles totaled three hits but applied pressure throughout the lineup. Delanie Thames led the way, finishing 2-for-3, while Kayla Christensen added a single as Georgia Southern threatened in multiple innings.
vs. Eastern Illinois (1-2)
Eastern Illinois jumped out early in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the first two innings before breaking the game open with a six-run fifth to win 10-4 in seven innings.
Georgia Southern responded with resilience at the plate, collecting seven hits and producing several key rallies.
Christensen paced the offense with a perfect 2-for-2 performance, scoring two runs and reaching base multiple times. Center fielder Emma Davis added a strong showing of her own, going 2-for4 with 2 RBI, driving in crucial runs to keep the Eagles within striking distance.
In the circle, Georgia Southern used three pitchers to complete the game. LHP Shaylin Stringer made the start, tossing 2.0 innings and striking out one while navigating early pressure. LHP Kaylee Croft followed in relief, making her first collegiate appearance, and battled through 2.0 innings against a competitive Panthers lineup.
Chipola College transfer Hannah Worthington closed the game with a steady performance, throwing 3.0 innings and allowing just one earned run, keeping Eastern Illinois in check over the final frames.
Georgia Southern wraps up tournament play on Sunday, Feb. 8, facing UNC Greensboro (1-2) at noon, following the Eastern Illinois–Western Illinois matchup at 9:30 a.m. ET.
