Women's Soccer Draws Louisiana, 1-1, On Sunday

Bri Conley's goal just 55 seconds into the second half earns the Eagles a road point

LAFAYETTE, La. - Georgia Southern women's soccer earned a point on Sunday, drawing Louisiana with a 1-1 score in Sun Belt Conference action from Lafayette.

The Eagles move to 2-7-3 overall and 0-2-2 in the Sun Belt, while Louisiana is now 4-4-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the league. Georgia Southern returns home to Statesboro on Thursday, October 2, hosting Georgia State in a 7 p.m. Sun Belt Conference contest from Bo Pitts Field.

Louisiana wasted little time tallying its goal as a corner kick from Kendal Green found the head of Salma Elhaimer in the third minute for the go-ahead score. The Ragin' Cajuns would hold onto that 1-0 advantage into halftime, outshooting the Eagles by an 8-5 margin.

It took only 55 seconds for the Eagles to equalize once the second half began. Erin Wilkins' service into the box was misplayed by Louisiana goalkeeper Natalie Mayes, and the ball dropped to Bri Conley with her back to goal. Conley turned and volleyed the shot into the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Louisiana outshot the Eagles by a 9-2 margin for the rest of the second half, but neither team could find the winning goal.

The Ragin' Cajuns finished the match with a 17-8 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Mayes made five saves in net for Louisiana, while Katie Oakley made one save on the day for the Eagles. Louisiana was whistled for five fouls and one offsides, while the Eagles were whistled for three fouls and two offsides.

"I'm pleased with the second half effort today," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach Chris Adams said. "I thought we had lots of energy and passion and at the start we created and deserved the goal. However, we really need to figure out how we can get off to a faster start. We've spotted teams goals on multiple occasions, which then forces us to chase the game. We absolutely have to play better in the first half if we are going to climb the Sun Belt standings."
