Montgomery, Al. --- The Georgia Southern baseball team (28-31) concluded their 2025 season with a loss to Louisiana (27-30) on Thursday afternoon (May 22nd) at the Sun Belt Tournament.
Unlike the previous two in Montgomery, the Eagles let the Cajuns strike first with two singles in the opening frame by the Cajuns. Outside of this,
Carter DeGondea would have another incredible showing on the mound, going 5.1 innings. The junior would allow just five hits, two runs, and striking out four in his final appearance of the year.Â
The score would remain 1-0 until the fifth, when Southern's offense would finally come out of its shell. After a leadoff single from
Luke Odden and two successful bunt attempts, the Eagles would load the bases with no outs. After the Cajuns retired the next two batters, JuJu Stevens stepped in the box to salvage the inning still. He did so in a big way. Stevens towered a line drive perfectly into the left center gap, clearing the bases and putting his Eagles up 3-1.
The Cajuns would get one back in the sixth with a hit batter with the bases loaded forcing
Davis Smith to step onto the rubber. In his first batter, Smith would force a double play to second to end the inning with no more damage. However, the Cajuns would storm more in the seventh. Two singles and two errors would be the catalyst for the Cajuns to put two runs on the board, taking a 4-3 lead late. The Eagles would not be done yet.
To lead off the eighth, Stevens stepped into the box again. On a 1-1 pitch, he would drill a pitch the other way that cleared the fence, tying up th game. Stevens would have all four RBIs for the Eagles on the day. On the tournament, he would have eight hits, eight RBIs, and two homers.Â
However, in the bottom of the same inning, a leadoff single and two wild pitches made way for a sac-fly from the Cajuns to put them ahead, eventually winning the contest.
Nico Senese would be the other Eagle to have a multi hit ball game with his double and triple on the afternoon. Three senior in Odden,
Cade Parker, and
JP Herrholz would also have hits in the final game of their collegiate career.
With the loss, the Eagles finish their 2025 campaign with a 28-31 record, and 14-19 in Sun Belt play. The squad would see two All-Sun Belt team members, and the top two batting averages in the conference as well.Â
