Montgomery, Al. --- The Georgia Southern baseball team (28-30) fell to the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina (45-11) by a 1-8 margin on Wednesday evening (May 21st) to start the double elimination portion of the Sun Belt Tournament.
The Eagles continued their hitting prowess from yesterday, as a hit in the first led to a solo shot in the second inning by Cade Parker. His slam would be his 14th of the season, leading the team by two. However, the Eagles would struggle to produce any runs after that. Despite eight hits on the night, and six coming after the home run, the Eagles were stopped at just the one run.
The Chanticleers were held scoreless through the first two frames, but would score all their runs in the fourth through seventh innings to make it too large of a hill for the Eagles to climb. Despite the runs, a duo of Eagles had solid performances late. Freshman Alex Mason entered and opened some eyes. He would strike out the side in the seventh, including one of the likes of Blake Barthol, one of the most lethal hitters in the country, Landry Mead would pitch the eighth inning to close out his collegiate career, and ended on a high note with two strikeouts to keep Coastal off the board late.
Nico Senese and JP Herrholz would each have a pair of hits on the evening to pace the Eagles offensively.
The Eagles await to play the loser of Louisiana and Marshall for an elimination contest set for tomorrow, May 22nd), at 1:30 PM ET in Montgomery.
