Macon, Ga. — The Georgia Southern baseball team (20-13, 6-6 SBC) took down the Bears of Mercer (22-13, 7-5 SOCON) 8-3 on Wednesday night (April 9th).
The earlier parts of the contest were where the Eagles produced their offense, as in the opening frame, a
Nico Senese double would pave the way for
Sean White to blast his third homer of the year over the shorter right-center wall to give the Eagles a quick 2-0 lead, which they never looked back on.
In the third four hits would plate an additional two more for Southern, including an RBI-single from J.C Peacher, who was one of three Eagles on the night to go for a trio of base knocks on the evening with the other two in
Josh Tate and
Daniel Haab. The trio would combine for five RBIs with White adding on three of his own.
In the fourth, a whopping five hits would score three more for the Blue and White, all of which coming with two outs in the frame and all of them coming in the form of singles.
On the mound, the underclassmen shone,
Thomas Burke would return to the mound and fully got his swagger back from his last outing. The true freshman would go 4.2 innings, including four innings of scoreless and hitless ball. Only allowing three hits and two runs, all of which coming in the fifth, Burke would also punch out three on the night.
Heading into the sixth, the Eagles had a 7-2 advantage before Tate sent a moonshot to left field to open up the inning and give his Eagles their eighth run. In relief for Burke,
Carson Bryant would feed off his predecessor and have a solid outing. The sophomore would only give up a singular run in his 3.1 innings and included five strikeouts, which all came at opportune times. The Bears would strand three in the sixth and two in the seventh with inning-ending punchouts.
Jax Lewis would be the one to close the door in the ninth, forcing a 1-2-3 frame that ended on a strikeout. The Eagles 14 hits was also their most in a contest since their massive win over Georgia State to open their series.
Next, the Eagles have their first of seven straight hone games as the Monarchs of Old Dominion roll into Statesboro for their Sun Belt series. First pitch on Bring the Heat Night at J.I. is set for 6:30 pm.
