Charleston, ScC. --- The Georgia Southern baseball team (24-21, 10-11 BSC) fell to the Cougars of Charleston (25-18) by an 8-3 score at Patriots Point on Wednesday evening (April 30th).
It didn't take long for the Eagles to start their engine offensively, as in just the second at-bat of the game Josh Tate (playing out of his typical leadoff spot role, smashed a 425+ foot homer to left field that would give the Eagles the first lead. In the first few innings, starter Evan Vandenbosch was dealing for the Eagles on the bump. He would retire the first eight batters he saw, including three strikeouts. However, the Cougars would tie up the contest in the third when they would steal home in a bases-loaded scenario.
In the fourth, the Cougars took the lead for good with their five runs that came across in the frame.Their four hits in the inning, half of which were doubles, secured them a 6-1 lead heading into the fifth. Georgia Southern, mainly Sean White, would respond in the sixth inning with a homer that nearly perfectly mirrored Tate's to start the game. His shot to left would put the contest at a 6-3 margin. However, two security runs scored in both the sixth and the eighth for the Cougars would prove to be insurmountable for the Eagles, falling for the second time this season to Charleston.
All of the Eagles four hits went for extra bases on the night, including a Tate double to lead off the sixth, to pace the squad. White would have his homer, with Nico Senese doubling as well. On the mound, a trio of Eagles would not surrender a run in their short outings on the night in Garrett Mackowiak, Will Robbins, and Jax Lewis. They would combine for two innings while only giving up three hits and striking out three.
Next, the Eagles have their penultimate home series of the season when James Madison rolls into town. As we celebrate our Vs Cancer weekend, first pitch for Friday night's Fishin' in the Park game is set for 6:30 PM.
