Lafayette, La. --- The Georgia Southern baseball team (24-20, 10-11 SBC) defeated Louisiana (22-24, 12-9 SBC) by just a 4-3 margin on Sunday afternoon (April 27th).
Once again, it was the Cajuns who would strike first in their opening frame as a stolen base, followed by an Eagles pickoff going awry, caused the Cajuns to get a lone run in the first. Additionally, they would score a singular run in both the next two frames to take a quick 3-0 lead before the Eagles made the call to the bullpen for their best relief outing of the season.
Carter DeGondea would enter in the bottom of the third inning and immediately escape a jam he inherited by forcing an infield lineout to strand the bags full of Cajuns. The junior would eventually finish the game, going 6.1 innings and not allow a single Cajun run in that span. Picking up his fourth win of the season, and still without a loss, he would only allow three hits in his 25 Cajun batters faced, while also striking out two.Â
The top of the fourth inning would be when the Eagles made their move. On a 1-2 pitch to start the frame,
Cade Parker would launch a 335 foot homer that just cleared the wall in the left corner to give the Eagles their first run of the contest. For Parker, it would be his ninth long ball of the season and had a breakout performance. The next inning, the Eagles would load the bases before JC Peacher would use his speed to avoid a double play and reach on a fielder's choice that plated an Eagle. The next batter, Parker stepped up in a big way again, launching a ball that burned the Cajun center fielder. Parker's double not only gave the Eagles the 4-3 lead, but also gave him a 3-3 day with just a triple off the coveted cycle.Â
Both relief pitchers continued to dominate, but the Cajuns would not go down without a scare in ghe final frame. After a hit batter to start the inning, DeGondea would immediately respond by thrwoing out the lead runner on a bunt for the first out, followed by a hot lineout to Parker at short. The Cajuns would then double down the line in no man's land to put the winning run in scoring position. However, the Eagles would keep their cool by forcing a fly out to right field to end the ball game.Â
Aside from Parker,
Josh Tate and
Sean White would each continue to stay hot at the plate, going for two hits on the day as well. Now with 12 one-run games on the season, the Eagles are 9-3 in those contests.
Next up, the Eagles complete their five-game road stretch with a midweek contest at Charleston where Southern is hoping for revenge after falling to the Cougars earlier this season. First pitch at Patriot's Point is set for 6 PM ET.
