Explosive First Inning Makes Way for Run-Rule Victory Over Brown, 11-1

Statesboro, Ga. --- The Georgia Southern baseball team (8-6, 0-0 SBC) defeated Brown (0-8, 0-0 Ivy) in a run-rule 11-1 victory in a seven-inning contest that took just over two hours on Friday night (March 7th).

The first inning was the amalgamation of how the contest went for both sides of the game on the night. Kade Grundy would take the mound to start for the Eagles and would strike out the side in the first three batters he faced. The senior right-hander would throw a complete game, only allowing four hits and a singular run for the Bears, which came in the sixth. Grundy also would toss seven strikeouts, setting a new season high.

The bottom of the first saw the first four Eagles hit collectively for the cycle. Josh tate would deliver a triple down the right-field line before J.C. Peacher would slap an RBI-double down the opposite line to strike the board first. Then, Sean Smith would touch them all and shoot an opposite field home run, marking already his seventh long ball this season. JP Herrholz would then single to complete th feat, all with no outs. Georgia Southern would go on to get four more hits and total eight runs in the opening frame, sending twelve batters to the dish.

In the bottom of the third, the Eagles added one more off a walk followed by a Sean Smith double led to Herrholz delivering a sac fly to make it 9-0. The Bears' lone run would come in the sixth after Grundy would give up three single in the inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Odden would get drilled by a pitch, which was followed by four consecutive walks to plate two runs and end the ball game.

In three of the past four games, the Eagle offense has scored eleven or more runs and have averaged 10 runs in those four games. The last time the Eagles would score eight or runs in the first was a 15-2 thrashing of Marshall last season on April 27th.

The Eagles and Bears next take the field tomorrow to complete the series for a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon on Alumni Weekend.
