Eagles Split Doubleheader, But Take Series Over Panthers

Atlanta, Ga. — The Georgia Southern Eagles (17-10, 5-4 SBC) split the Saturday twinbill by scores of 1-2 and 7-1, respectively, on March 29th. The Eagles would go on to take the series over Georgia State (18-12, 5-4 SBC).
In game one, the script was completely flipped from Friday night's victory as the Eagles would only muster six hits and a singular run to show for it. The top of the first would see two quick outs before back-to-back doubles from Sean Smith and Sean White would see Southern continue their streak of eight straight innings with a run crossing the board.
However, Panthers' pitcher Cole Roberts would settle in and shut down the offense. The usual game three starter would get the nod and go for 8.1 innings, only giving up the one earned run and six hits.
In the second inning, State would answer right back as a leadoff double would be responded with two, one-out doubles to nod up the contest. Their leading and eventual winning run would come in the fourth as a walk and single to start the inning would eventually send a Panther home to take the lead.
It was a pitcher's duel in game one, as Jax Lewis would get the start for the opening game on Saturday, going 3.1 innings and giving up four hits and two runs. Jacob Phillips would enter for yet another great outing of relief work. The newest SBC Pitcher of the Week would finish the game, going 4.2 innings, not giving up a run and only two hits, while also striking out four.
In the ninth, back-to-back one-out singles from both White and Daniel Haab would spark the offense, but was cut down when pinch runner Jett Lovett was gunned down trying to take third. The Panthers would go on to hold on, handing the Eagles their first loss of the season in one-run contests.
In game two, both squads would continue to struggle offensively with a scoreless opening frame in the series finale. However, Southern would be the ones to open up the runs early on and spark up the offense.
A Jonathan Jaime double in the alley in the second would send Daniel Haab all the way home from first after he walked to open up the frame. Two batters later, JP Herrholz would add a double of his own the other direction to mirror what Jaime did. Later, a Nico Senese sac-fly would eventually score Herrholz to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead early.
It would be a different game three starter for the Eagles as Evan Vandenbosch would get the nod and have an impressive outing in his first weekend start. The junior would go three full innings, only giving up a hit and run each while adding a strikeout to the mix. After Carson would have a short outing, the Eagles would go right back to the pen in Brady Pendley.
For Pendley, he would clearly have his most dominant outing of the season. The junior would finish the contest, going 5.2 innings and only allowing one Panther hit in that span. Not only that, but he would have his second straight outing of seven punchouts to pick up his third win of 2025.
However, the contest would stay close at 3-1 for a good part of the ball game. In the seventh inning though, that would change. A Josh Tate triple down the line, followed by a Senese walk, would put two on for Sean Smith. Fortunately for Southern, Smith would reach and pick up an RBI off a Panther error. With now two on and two away, Haab would step in the box and crush a 2-1 fastball the opposite way, just clearing the elevated right-field wall to blow open the score and lead the Eagles to their 7-1 victory.
For the Eagles, it was their first series victory over the Panthers in Atlanta since 2019, and the first series to come down to game three since 2021. For the Southern pitching staff, they now have only allowed five runs in their last four games. Offensively, the bats have produced 39 runs in their last four games.
Next, the Eagles face their biggest test of the season in a neutral site midweek bout against top-10 Clemson at SRP Park Tuesday night. First pitch in North Augusta on the 1st of April is set for 6 PM.
