Atlanta, Ga. — The Georgia Southern Eagles (16-9, 4-3 SBC) took down the Panthers of Georgia State (17-11, 4-3 SBC) in run-rule, shutout fashion, 20-0, on Friday evening (March 28th).
An offensive explosion and a pitching masterclass from
Kade Grundy would combine beautifully for Georgia Southern's largest victory since their 35-8 victory over ULM in 2023. It also was their largest shutout victory since February 21, 2014, where they blanked Maryland-Eastern Shore 23-0 in Statesboro. The offense would combine for 18 hits on the night and only allow five from the defensive side.
A singular run in each of the first three innings, including
Cade Parker's second homer in as many games, would put the board at 3-0 after three frames. Meanwhile, Grundy would punch out four Panthers in his first three innings on the bump. The senior would go for six complete innings, only giving up four hits, finishing with six Ks, and not issuing a walk in 24 batters faced.
Fifteen hits over the next four innings for the Eagles would plate 17 runs, including five spots in both the fifth and seventh frames, to reach the two decade mark on the night. A whopping eleven Eagles would collect base hits on the night, including eight doubles on the night. The mark would see the most doubles in a game in 18 years, where the Eagles knocked 10 vs. NJIT in 2007.
Apart from the 18 hits, six Eagles would have multi-hit nights as well. The bigger performances came from
Josh Tate, who had four RBIs on his 2-4 night that included a grand slam. Parker would go a masterful 3-4, and like Tate, had 4 RBIs from his solo homer and bases-clearing double in the seventh.
Jonathan Jaime would go 2-3, with both his base knocks coming in the form of doubles, grabbing another RBI on the campaign.
Multiple Eagles would also step in for pinch-hit base knocks as well, including the likes of
JD Kaiser,
Bryson Trammell,
Jack Myers, and
Landry Mead. Back on the mound,
Rhett Hammontree would shut the door in the seventh for the Eagles. The former position player in 2024 would give up only one base knock and strike out one in his inning of work.
Next, the Eagles face another doubleheader in now back-to-back road series due to impending weather on Sunday. First pitch at the GSU Baseball Complex is set for 2 PM, with the series finale set to follow 45 minutes after Game 1's conclusion.
