PREVIEW: Eagles Set for In-State Clash with Georgia State

Eagles look to secure third series win on the season

STATESBORO – Georgia Southern softball returns home for a three-game series against in-state foe Georgia State at Beautiful Eagle Field beginning on Friday, March 28 at 6 p.m. 

The Eagles will play the Panthers on Saturday at 3 p.m. before wrapping up play on Sunday at 1pm.  All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats are available at GSEagles.com/SBStats

Georgia Southern enters the series 20-13 overall, 4-2 in conference play while Georgia State is 10-23 overall, 2-4 in Sun Belt play. 

ABOUT GEORGIA STATE
  • Georgia State clinched the series against South Alabama (March 21-23) after taking an early advantage on the weekend. With wins on Friday (1-0) and Saturday (6-4) head coach Becca Owens and the Panthers marked the first series win over the Jags since 2017.
  • Maia Mumpfield leads the offense with a .371 batting average including nine doubles and 14 RBI
  • The Panthers pitching staff combines for a 5.04 ERA with four different pitchers getting the bulk of the innings. 

LAST TIME OUT 
Georgia Southern took its second conference series of the season with a pair of wins over App State in Boone last weekend. The teams opened the series on Friday with a 5-3 win as Maddie Johnson picked up her ninth victory in the circle. GS dropped game two in six innings 10-2 before bouncing back in game three with a 4-1 win on Sunday. Alana Barnard earned her fourth win on the season in as many starts. 

STRONG START TO SUN BELT PLAY
The 4-2 conference record marks the best start to Sun Belt play since the 2018 season and the best in the Sharon Perkins era. 

MJ DOES IT AGAIN
Freshman Maddie Johnson earned her second Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors and is the first in program history to win the award twice in a season. Johnson posted a 0.62 ERA over the week in three appearances against Charleston Southern and App State allowing just one run on five hits in 11.1 innings pitched and tallied eight strikeouts. The Athens, Ga., native picked up the win in game one of Georgia Southern's series against App State holding the Mountaineers to one run on four hits and picked up four strikeouts for her ninth victory of the season. In game three, Johnson picked up her first career save not allowing a hit in 2.0 innings of work. She came into relief with no outs in the bottom of the sixth and retired the side in order with a lineup and a pair of strikeouts. Against Charleston Southern, Johnson came into relief allowing just one hit over three innings. 

DAVIS DOES WHAT DAVIS DOES 
Junior Emma Davis' bat is heating up and now leads the squad with a .316 batting average. Davis went 4-for-10 last weekend with a double and four runs batted in. 

LOCKDOWN DEFENSE
Georgia Southern currently ranks sixth in the NCAA in fielding percentage posting a .981 which is on pace for the best in program history. 

IT STARTS IN THE CIRCLE
The pitching staff hold a cumulative 2.29 ERA which currently ranks 19th in the NCAA.
