Eagles Roll Past App State, 4-1, to Take Series

Freshman set collegiate first on Sunday

BOONE, N.C. – Georgia Southern softball (20-13, 4-2 SBC) rolled past App State (10-20, 1-5), 4-1, to take the series on Sunday at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.

The Eagles picked up its second consecutive series win after securing the series last weekend against Southern Miss. The 4-2 Sun Belt record marks the best conference start through two series in the Perkins era and since the 2018 season.

Alana Barnard tossed a gem in the circle allowing just one run on three hits and tallied two strikeouts in five innings of work. The junior picked up her fourth victory of the season in as many starts. Maddie Johnson pitched two hitless innings including two strikeouts in relief earning her first collegiate save.

With two outs and bases loaded in the top of the second, Emma Davis drove in a pair of runs on a two-RBI single as it was all it would need to secure the series. Valerie Combs extended the inning on an RBI-single back up the middle to make it 3-0.

Georgia Southern tallied a run in the fourth when Combs recorded her team leading ninth double of the season to score Madison Humber who led off the inning with an infield single.

App State cut into the deficit with a lead off solo home run in the sixth to make it 4-1 but Johnson took over in the circle to retire the side with a line out and back-to-back strikeouts.

The offense tallied 11 hits in the contest for its seventh double-digit total hits performance and fourth best total of the season.

Four Eagles notched a pair of hits for multi-hit performances including Faith Barth, Davis, Combs, and Humber. Davis recorded her first multi-RBI game of the season and Combs tallied her fourth. Humber went 2-for-3 for her first collegiate multi-hit game.
