Softball Takes Opening Game of Series Over App State, 5-3

Eagles come from behind to secure win

BOONE, N.C. – The Georgia Southern softball team (19-12, 3-1 SBC) opened its three-game series against App State with a 5-3 victory on Friday afternoon at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium. 

Down one run heading into the fifth inning, the Eagles evened the score before scoring a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh inning to secure the victory. 

App State (9-19, 0-4 SBC) struck first on an RBI double to take an early lead but the Eagles responded in the fifth to even things, 1-1. Gracie Bellard led off the inning with her fourth double of the season recording the Eagles first hit of the contest before then scoring on an RBI single off the bat of Emma Davis

Georgia Southern jumped out in front in the sixth scoring two runs to take a 3-1 lead. With runners on first and second and two outs, Kayla Christensen drove in a pair of runs on an RBI double to right field. 

The Eagles extended its lead in the seventh when Madi Gillespie used a RBI fielder's choice and Bellard drew an RBI infield single to plate the final two runs of the game for Southern. 

The Mountaineers cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh scoring a pair of runs before Maddie Johnson reentered the game to retire the side to make the final, 5-3. 

Johnson secured her ninth victory in the circle tossing 6.1 innings allowing one run on four hits and fanning four Mountaineer batters. 

Bellard led the offense going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. The pair of hits marks her third multi-hit performance of the season. Four different Eagles tallied a hit each in the contest.
