Softball Scores Early to Notch 4-1 Win Over UCF

The Eagles move to 11-8 on the season

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Georgia Southern softball team notched its second power 4 win of the season with a 4-1 victory over UCF on Sunday at the UCF Softball Complex.

Georgia Southern (11-8) scored in each of the first three innings and Maddie Johnson was once again stellar in the circle tossing 6.2 innings allowing just one run on six hits and picked up three strikeouts.

Georgia Southern struck first in the opening frame to take an early, 1-0, lead. Kayla Christensen and Valerie Combs recorded back-to-back singles before Payton Cushman walked to load the bases. With two outs, Delanie Thames punched a single up the middle to put a run on the board.

The Eagles extended its lead in the second when Christensen recorded her second hit of the game on an RBI double to left center field to score Braelyn Queen who reached on a fielding error.

Kyla Maxwell doubled the Eagle lead in the third on an RBI triple to make it 4-0. Maxwell plated Barth who was hit by a pitch and Thames who reached on her second hit of the day.

The Eagles would go down quite in the final four innings as the Knights tried to make a comeback in the seventh. The Eagle defense would easily get the first two outs but with a runner in scoring position the Knights took advantage on an RBI single to make it 4-1.

Johnson allowed just four hits through six innings before Charla Clifton entered in relief to earn her first career save as a flyout to center ended the contest.

Christensen and Thames led the offense each going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored while Maxwell went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
