Johnson’s No-Hitter Highlights Day One of Charge On Classic

The freshman tosses first no-hitter since 2017

ORLANDO, Fla. – Freshman Maddie Johnson tossed her first career no-hitter in game one against George Mason, 3-0, and fell to North Florida, 8-0 (6), in game two to open the UCF Charge On Classic on Friday morning.

Johnson tossed the 19th no-hitter in program history and the first since the 2017 season when Kierra Camp tossed a no-hit bid against Savannah State. The freshman picked up a career high 11 strikeouts in the contest.

Game One (Georgia Southern 3, George Mason 0)
Georgia Southern (9-6) got on the board first in the opening frame to take an early, 2-0 lead. Kayla Christensen reached on an error to lead off the inning before scoring on a Madi Gillespiie sacrifice fly to left field. Faith Barth followed with an RBI single of her own to score Valerie Combs who drew a five-pitch walk.

The Eagles extended its lead in the third as Barth recorded her second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to score Combs from third. Combs led off the inning with her team leading seventh double of the season.

Johnson (5-2) tossed her fourth complete game of the season to earn the victory in the circle. The freshman fanned eight of the nine batters and left three runners on base.

Barth led the offense going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in as the Eagles tallied seven hits in the game.

Game Two (Georgia Southern 0, North Florida 8)
Georgia Southern struggled offensively recording just three hits in the contest. Payton Cushman, Emma Davis, and Combs recorded the Eagles trio of hits.

North Florida jumped out to an early lead in the opening frame on a three-run home run and RBI single before plating two more in the second, making it 6-0. The Ospreys picked up two more runs in the sixth to end things early at 8-0.

Bailey Holland (2-3) picked up the loss in the circle tossing two innings allowing six runs on four hits. Morgan Kendrick came into relief tossing three hitless innings and Alana Barnard made her first appearance of the season.
