JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Alden Applewhite scored 16 points, and Tyren Moore added 11, but Georgia Southern (3-4) couldn't overcome Youngstown State's second-half surge in a 67-61 loss Monday night at Edward Waters University.

The Eagles led early in the second half after a Moore three-pointer put them ahead 35-32, but the Penguins responded with a 10-2 run and never trailed again. Youngstown State controlled the glass with a 39-29 rebounding advantage and held the Eagles to 37 percent shooting.

Applewhite finished 5-of-10 from the field and added five rebounds. Moore hit three three-pointers and added three assists, while Nakavieon White scored 14 points off the bench on 4-of-11 shooting with two threes.

Georgia Southern forced 19 turnovers and turned them into 17 points, but Youngstown State countered with 28 points in the paint and 16 points from its bench. Rich Rolf led all scorers with 22 points, hitting four three-pointers and grabbing six rebounds for the Penguins. Cris Carroll added 16 points, and Jason Nelson tallied seven points and five rebounds.

The Eagles trailed 32-30 at halftime after a back-and-forth first 20 minutes that featured two ties and six lead changes. Applewhite's scoring stretch early in the period kept Georgia Southern within reach, but Youngstown State repeatedly answered with baskets around the rim.

Graduate Spudd Webb pulled down a season-high seven rebounds and hit a pair of free throws in the closing second of the first half. Andres Burney rounded out the four Eagles in double figures on Monday, scoring 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting off the bench.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both sides traded possessions to begin the game, before Alden Applewhite fought through some traffic to convert an and-one opportunity at the 15:39 mark to give Georgia Southern the lead, 3-2.

Youngstown State extended their lead in the first half to a six point game, 15-9. Applewhite and Andres Burney continued to cut into the lead, scoring eight points each.

Out of the break, Georgia Southern's Tyren Moore knocked down a three-pointer in the corner to give the Eagles their first lead in the second half, 33-32.

Down seven with just over seven minutes on the clock, Jefferson Koulibaly drew his second charge of the night, giving the Eagles possession before Tyren Moore lobbed a pass to Nakavieon White for the slam, 54-49.

Georgia Southern cut the lead down to two possessions with under a minute to play in the contest, but two costly turnovers halted a late surge.

Graduate guard Spudd Webb hauled in a season-high seven rebounds and tallied two steals to go along with his four points. All four of Webb's points came from the free throw line.

Redshirt senior Andres Burney came off the bench after missing the Florida State game due to illness, collecting a season-high 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
