OXFORD, Miss. - Georgia Southern men's tennis knocked off fellow Sun Belt foe South Alabama, 5-2, in a non-conference tilt held on the campus of Ole Miss on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (3-2) will now face host Ole Miss - who defeated Tulane on Saturday -- in a 4 ET matchup on Sunday. South Alabama (1-1) will take on Tulane at Noon ET. It was the first win for the Eagles over the Jaguars since February 27, 1987, and snapped a 10-game slide to South Alabama.
Georgia Southern claimed the doubles point with wins from No. 54-ranked Pol del Castillo and Dimitris Paliouras at No. 1 doubles, as well as Laurent Julia Calac and Aaron James Williams at No. 2 doubles.
The Eagles won the first sets in four of the six singles matches. Williams, the reigning SBC Player of the Week, notched a 6-2, 6-2 win over Braden Hannig at No. 2 singles. Pierre Mouesca then delivered a 6-1, 6-4 win over Victor Frumholz at No. 3 singles. Castillo then clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Juan Accossatto at No. 4 singles.
"We have a lot of respect for South Alabama," Georgia Southern head men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said. "They are consistently a top team in our conference. And to come away with our first win over them in nearly 50 years is a testament to what this group is building. We're excited to put it on the line again tomorrow."
