JONESBORO, Ark. - Georgia Southern women's soccer tallied a goal in each half to pick up their first Sun Belt win of the year, downing host Arkansas State by a 2-0 score on Thursday afternoon at the A-State Soccer Complex.
The win for the Eagles (4-6-1, 1-1 SBC) halted a three-match losing streak as well as a four-match slide to the Red Wolves (3-3-2, 0-2 SBC). Georgia Southern returns home to Statesboro on Sunday, hosting Coastal Carolina in a 1 p.m. matchup at Bo Pitts Field.
The Eagles struck quickly, taking the lead just before the five minute mark of the match. Sophomore Meredith Pugh drove down the left side to the end line, attempting to cross a ball into the box. The ball was blocked and caromed back to Pugh, who then shot from a tight angle and hit the side netting with her second goal of the season.
Pugh nearly added a second goal in the 23rd minute as she got onto a cross in the box, but her quick shot was saved by Arkansas State goalkeeper Damaris Deschaine.
The match remained 1-0 into halftime as each team tallied six shots in the first half.
Georgia Southern doubled its lead in the 54th minute on a set piece. Junior Erin Wilkins' corner kick was hammered home off of a header from freshman Claire Casey for the defender's third goal of the season and the 2-0 advantage. It was the first time Arkansas State had given up multiple goals in a match this season as the Red Wolves had only conceded three total goals through seven matches previously.
The Eagles finished the match with an 11-10 edge in shots. Sophomore Quinn Wilson made five saves in net for Georgia Southern, recording her first shutout of the season, while Deschaine made a pair of saves in net for the Red Wolves. Arkansas State held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks and the Red Wolves were whistled for 12 fouls, compared to seven for the Eagles. Each team was offsides once on the day.
