STATESBORO- Georgia Southern volleyball (8-1) was hitting .580 after two sets and never turned off the gas in a 3-0 sweep of Alabama State (3-8) in the Bash in the Boro opener on Thursday night, winning its seventh straight.
"We had it going from an offensive production standpoint tonight," head coach
Chad Willis said. "We had multiple players involved. I thought we did a good job of playing through the middle, especially Lydia, and we hit over 400 as a team and sided out at over 75% each set. All in all, it was a good offensive night."
The Eagles rolled early on. A
Maggie Sale ace put them up 7-2 and was pushed to 15-10 after a
Kirsten Barrett kill on a misdirection. Sale slammed one to the floor at set point to take the first set 25-18, where the Eagles hit .556.
Not to be outdone, GS kept the pedal to the metal in the second frame, hitting an unconscious .609 (16-2-23). The Eagles went up 16-8 following a
Reagan Barth ace, and
Lydia Seymour ended a dominant set with a kill to win 25-13. Seymour was hitting over .800 through two sets.
The Hornets led early in the third stanza but were quickly snuffed out by a 7-0 run tied at ten. Another Sale ace capped that off, and
Sam Bowron punctuated the game, and a sweep, with her third kill of the set.
Georgia Southern finished hitting .429 (43-7-84), a season-high mark and their first game hitting .400 as a team since its .452 mark against UNC Asheville on Sep. 12, 2023.
Seymour was at the forefront of the attack, recording a match-high 10 kills on 15 swings to just one error, a career-best. Seymour hit .600 for the game while adding a pair of blocks.
"The setters have done a great job of dishing out straight butter," Seymour said with a laugh postgame. "This team is amazing, we've just got to keep taking care of business."
Four other Eagles hit over .500 in the game - Barrett (.833, 5-0-6),
Jordan Christy (.750, 3-0-4), Barth (.625, 6-1-8) and
Jillian Gray (.583, 7-0-12).Â
Sale contributed three aces and two blocks.
Barrett added 23 assists and
Lexi Duffy came off the bench with nine.
Ashlyn Lovett added another 16 digs in three sets, and
Paige Powers had eight of her own in the win.
GS has swept four consecutive matches for the first time since 10/21-29, 2023, won 13 consecutive sets for the first time since 8/27-9/9, 2022, and has its longest win streak since 2013.
The Eagles will look to keep rolling on Friday night against former SOCON foe Western Carolina.
