Volleyball Pushes Win Streak to Five With Sweep of Charleston Southern

Hold Buccaneers to opponent-low .084 hitting mark in sweep

STATESBORO- Georgia Southern volleyball (6-1) held Charleston Southern (3-5) to a .084 hitting percentage as it rolled to a 3-0 sweep on Friday night.

"I thought we did a nice job for the service line. That was part of our game plan coming in," head coach Chad Willis said. "Charleston Southern is a tricky team because they like to move so many hitters around and serve receive. We wanted to pressure them from the service line and disrupt what they did, and that aided our defense and helped us in transition."

The Eagles, and Jillian Gray, cooked to begin the first set as the outside hitter recorded four of the first five Eagles points on kills.

GS did not let the Bucs record more than two consecutive points for the remainder of the set as two attack errors made it a 25-17 win. CSU hit just .125 in the first set.

The two teams battled early on, but a 6-0 spread for the home team aided by a Paige Powers and Maggie Sale block assist put the Eagles up 17-9.

Kirsten Barrett made a desperation shove on a tip by Mayte Camacho and Reagan Barth and found the open space during a rally in the middle, pushing the lead to 19-10.

Jordan Christy emphatically sealed a 2-0 lead and 25-15 win with her first kill of the match.

It was more of the same in the third and final set with the Eagles hitting at a .345 clip. Christy ended another set with a kill as the Eagles pushed the win streak to five and set win streak to seven.

Powers (11) was the lone player in double figures in kills on either side, adding seven digs and a team-high three total blocks, with Reagan Barth and Gray recording seven apiece.

"It was a full team effort. I think everybody was going for it in the first set, we talked about how we had six errors, but they were good errors," Powers said. "We continued those restless sets, and I liked how everyone was going for it today."

Ashlyn Lovett continued her impressive dig stretch to begin the year, notching 16 in the win. She also recorded two aces to push over 100 for her career. In addition, she recorded her first kill of the season off a dig, just her fourth career kill.

Continuing the trend of kills from unlikely sources, Barrett tied a career-high with three kills, adding 27 assists and four digs.

Another crowd over 700 packed into Hanner Fieldhouse as the fans continued to support the volleyball team.

"[The fans] give us a lot of energy. It's electrifying in here," Willis said. "I've always said Hanner is one of the best game-day atmospheres, not just in the conference, but in the country. We appreciate all the fans coming out. We've got a great product, a team that works hard, and it's pretty energetic. If we keep building on that momentum and put crowds like this in Hanner, it's going to aid our team coming down the stretch."

Powers echoed the sentiment.

"It's so awesome. After KB's play in the second set, it was so loud in here," she said. "It felt like a flashback to Clemson, and that environment is something I'll remember for the rest of my life. If this keeps building, this is going to be awesome. I get chills even thinking about it."

The Eagles will look to sweep the weekend at 1:00 on Saturday against Furman.
