BOONE, N.C. - The Georgia Southern softball team ran its winning streak to six with a pair of victories against App State Thursday afternoon at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium. The Eagles won the first game 2-0 behind a strong pitching performance from
Anslie Pettit and
Morgan Kendrick before rolling in the second game 10-5 thanks to long balls from
Delanie Thames and
Faith Barth.
Game 1 - GS 2, App 0
A two-run third inning was all the Eagles needed to secure their fifth-straight win.
Katie Perkins singled to lead off the inning and Barth drew a walk.
Janai Conklin's soft single loaded the bases and Thames came through with a single to left field to put the Eagles on the board.
Dejah Mills drove in Conklin for the second run on an RBI fielder's choice.
The Eagles collected 10 hits led by two apiece from Perkins, Barth, Conklin and Thames while Mills picked up one.
Pettit (W, 12-7) went the first four innings, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out one to pick up the win. Kendrick (SV, 4) pitched the final three innings, allowing just two hits while striking out one.
Game 2 - GS 10, App 5
The bats broke out in a big way in the second game as the Eagles plated a Sun Belt-high 10 runs to roll to the easy win. In the first inning, Conklin singled through the left side to plate Davis. In the third inning, it was rinse and repeat as Conklin singled to drive in Davis. In the fourth inning, Georgia Southern scored seven runs on just three hits to bust the game open.
Kyla Maxwell doubled to score
Gracie Bellard, and then Perkins singled up the middle to plate Maxwell and
Makayla Brantley. With the bases juiced, Thames launched a grand slam off the roof of the indoor facility in right-center field to make it 9-0. It was her fourth home run of the season.
After the Mountaineers scored their first runs of the day, Barth blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning, her second round-tripper of the season.
Conklin and Davis led the way with two hits apiece, while Perkins, Barth, Thames, Bellard and Maxwell each had one.
Alana Barnard (W, 8-4) went four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts.
Bailey Holland (SV, 2) pitched the final three innings, giving up three runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
With the sweep, the Eagles move to 29-20, 11-12 in the Sun Belt. The two teams will wrap up the series and the regular season on Friday at 3 p.m. The game time could be moved up due to weather, but a decision will not be made until closer to game time.
