Eagles Split Rivalry Twinbill Against Appalachian State

Rubber match and regular season finale set for 11 a.m. on Friday

BOONE, N.C. – The Georgia Southern baseball team split a doubleheader against Appalachian State on Thursday at Smith Stadium, with the Mountaineers taking game one by a final score of 6-5 in 10 innings, while the Eagles took game two by a final of 14-4 in seven innings.

GAME ONE – 6-5 (10 inn.) APPALACHIAN STATE
Georgia Southern (28-25, 15-13 SBC) took to the board first with a lead-off home run from Josh Tate, his second lead-off homer of the season. However, App State (31-17-1, 16-11-1 SBC) put up three runs in the bottom of the second inning, then another run in the bottom of the third, to take a 4-1 lead after the first three frames of action.

The Eagles put up three runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning, starting with a Sean Smith RBI-single that scored Sam Blancato, then Tate's two-RBI single to center plated Sean White and Smith to tie the game at 4-4. Smith would hit a home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Eagles up 5-4, but the Mountaineers would tie the game in the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer, then walk off the contest with a solo homer in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Mitchell Gross fell to 2-5 on the year with the walk-off, while Grey LaSpaluto improved to 8-1.

GAME TWO – 14-4 (7 inn.) GEORGIA SOUTHERN
The script was flipped for game two as the Mountaineers (31-18-1, 16-12-1 SBC) took the early lead with an RBI-double in the bottom of the first inning. However, Southern (29-25, 16-13 SBC) scored three in the top of the third to take the lead and never look back, starting with a Tate RBI-double that scored Cade Parker, then a Schmidt RBI-single that scored Tate. Jarrett Brown would finish the ended with a foul sac fly that Smith tagged on to score the third run of the game.

Five runs would cross the plate for Georgia Southern in the top of the fourth inning, starting with a Smith bases-loaded walk to score T.J. McKenzie, then a Schmidt fielder's choice to plate Parker. Brown would score the other three runs on a home run to right center, taking a 8-1 lead over App.

While the Mountaineers would score three runs to half the lead, the Eagles would continue to fight back, with the middle infield duo of Parker and Tate knocked back-to-back homers in the top of the fifth to put the Eagles up 10-4. Smith's two-RBI double, Schmidt's sac fly, and Brown's RBI-triple put the Eagles up 14-4 to enter run-rule territory, and a shutdown inning by Joey White sealed the victory for the Eagles.

Ty Fisher earned his seventh win of the season after a quality start, allowing three earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts. App starter Everette Harris took his first loss of the season.

Jarrett Brown's triple in the top of the seventh was the 11th of his career, tying him at third all-time with Mark Hamlin and Chip Gray. J.R. Revere and Benjie Moore are tied for first all-time with 12 triples in their careers.
