STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team is set to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd in a three-game conference set starting on Friday night at J.I. Clements Stadium.
The Eagles bring a 20-21 record and a 9-9 Sun Belt record into the contest after most recently splitting a midweek series against the Mercer Bears. On Tuesday, the Eagles jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and held on to eventually take a 15-9 decision from the Bears. On Wednedsay, the Bears returned the favor with a 18-3 victory, the first Mercer victory in three years over Georgia Southern. Marshall enters the game with a 13-26 overall record anf a 6-12 record in conference. The Herd did not play a midweek contest, but fell two games to one to the Old Dominion Monarchs in the previous weekend's action.
Georgia Southern is 20-5 all-time against the Herd in a series that dates back to 1992, when both programs were members of the Southern Conference. After meeting a total of 14 times in the SoCon, the Herd left the conference and the two did not meet against until 2006 for a three-game non-conference series in Statesboro. The two met in Statesboro again in 2010, then played two in Beckley, W.Va., in 2011. The Herd joined the Sun Belt prior for the 2022-23 athletic season and the two met in Huntington, W.Va., last season. This is the first time since 2010 the two meet in Statesboro.
