No. 63 Eagles Move Into Semis With 4-0 Win Over CCU

Georgia Southern next faces fifth-seeded Louisiana on Saturday at 10 AM

Box Score

ROME, Ga. - The No. 63-ranked and top-seeded Georgia Southern men's tennis team moved into the semifinals of the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Championships with a 4-0 win over No. 8 seed Coastal Carolina on Friday at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga.

The Eagles (14-8) will now move on to to face fifth-seeded Louisiana - 4-3 winners over fourth-seeded South Alabama - on Saturday at 10 AM. Coastal Carolina sees its season come to a close with a 9-14 record. This is the third trip to the Sun Belt semifinals in program history and the first since 2021.

Georgia Southern collected the doubles point from the Chanticleers thanks to a 6-3 win by Aaron James Williams and Laurent Julia Calac at No. 3 doubles, as well as a 6-4 win by Judson Blair and Pierre Mouesca at No. 2 doubles.

The Eagles then came out and claimed five of six first sets in singles play. Calac notched a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rivers Cahill at No. 6 singles, then Sun Belt Player of the Year Dimitris Paliouras delivered a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ryuya Ata at No. 1 singles for the 3-0 lead.

Coastal Carolina fought back, forcing three singles matches to third sets. But Pol del Castillo clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-2 win over Lucas Wayenburg at No. 2 singles.

"I feel excited that we get another day to compete," Georgia Southern men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said. "Hats off to Coastal Carolina, Coach Powers does a great job with their team and they didn't go away. It's tournament tennis, their backs are against the wall, they're a very good team and that's what we expect. We expect everyone's best punch and we've got to be ready for it. We got our heads in the right places, we were ready to match it. These are the kinds of matches we love."
