POINT CLEAR, Ala. – The Georgia Southern women's golf team finished second at the Sun Belt Women's Golf Championship on Thursday at Lakewood Golf Club. The Eagles fell in the final championship round of match play to Texas State as the Bobcats won 4-1 and claimed its first title since 2016.
Texas State secured the Sun Belt Conference Championship with three match play victories in matches 1, 2, 4 in the final championship round. Individual Champion Hailey Jones picked up the first win over
Abby Newton before Malitda Svahn and Junia Gabasa earned the final two points for the Bobcats.
Regina Plascencia was the lone point for the Eagles after battling back to take the lead on the 13
th hole but the match was not finished before the Bobcats clinched the championship.
The Eagles advanced to the finals topping ULM 4-0-1 in the semifinal round.
Alex Stevenson earned the Eagles' first point of the semifinals with a 2&1 victory. Stevenson trailed in the match until she evened the score on the seventh hole to then take the lead on the tenth hole. She went 2UP for five of the last six holes to secure her match.
Haley Yerxa secured the second point for the Eagles with a 2&1 victory maintaining a 1UP lead throughout and never trailed in her match. Daniela Campillo evened the score on the tenth hole, but Yerxa secured the final four holes to add to the Eagles lead.
Louise Reau clinched the final match for the Eagles to earn a spot in the finals with a 4&3 win over Anna Andrysova. Reau never trailed in her match and built a 4UP lead through 15 holes to claim the win.
The Eagles finished second after the first three rounds of stroke play just behind Texas State to advance to the semifinals.
Georgia Southern has finished in the top-four seven of its eight Sun Belt Conference Championship appearances.
Georgia Southern, which came into the week ranked 54
th by Clippd, will await for an NCAA at-large bid to the NCAA Championship. The selection show will air on Wednesday, April 24, at 2 p.m. Texas State earns the Sun Belt's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
