POINT CLEAR, Ala. – The Georgia Southern women's golf team advanced to the semifinals after finishing second after three rounds of stroke play at the Sun Belt Conference Championship at Lakewood Golf Club. With the second-place finish, the Eagles are set to take on ULM in match play semifinals beginning on Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m.
Georgia Southern finished second after three rounds of stroke play shooting 288-301-288 (+13). The Eagles finished two strokes ahead of third place, ULM. Texas State currently sits in first and will take on Old Dominion in the semifinals. Play will begin at 8:30 a.m. from the Lakewood Golf Club.
Abby Newton led the Eagles shooting 72-75-72 to finish tied for seventh. Newton used an even par first round tallying a round high five birdies and was bogey-free on the front nine. In the second round, Newton shot an even par on the back nine to sit tied for 12
th after the round and an even par in the third round to finish 3-over par on the tournament. Newton led the field in total pars and second in par 4 scoring.
Haley Yerxa shot 78-71-71 to finish tied for tenth on the tournament. Yerxa used a stellar final two rounds shooting one-under par in each round. After round one, Yerxa tallied four birdies to jump up in the leaderboard tying for 21
st after the second round. In the third round, used four birdies and was bogey-free on the front nine to finish 4-over on the tournament.
Regina Plascencia finished T17 shooting 73-79-70. The sophomore finished stroke play strong with a 2-under par final round recording three birdies and was bogey-free on the back nine.
Alex Stevenson shot 73-76-75 to finish T27 and led the field in par 3 scoring in the first round.
Louise Reau shot 70-81-77 to finish T37 and tallied 11 birdies over the three rounds.
Three Eagles finished in the top-20 and two in the top-10. The Eagles led the field in total birdies and second in par 4 scoring.
