Eagles set program marks in 4x400m twice, Alanna Smith breaks 400m record
GAINESVILLE, Fla.– The Georgia Southern track and field team saw several school records set and several athletes set personal records at the Florida Relays.
"We had a pretty good team showing this weekend at the Florida Relays," head coach David Neville said. "We had a number of new personal bests, top ten marks and even two school records! I'm pleased with where we are at but there are also kinks we have to iron out for us to be at our best."
Two program records were set during the two-day event period. The 4x400m team of Itzia Mejia Garcia, Alanna Smith, Lauren Euler and NaJ Watson broke the school record in that event with a time of 3:40.94, and then broke it again on Saturday with a second-place finish and a time of 3:39.58. The previous record was 3:41.68 set in 2007.
Not to be outdone, Smith also set a new school record in the 400m with a time of 53.28, breaking the previous record of 53.74 set by Scovia Ayikoru in 2021.
Two more Eagles also moved into the top ten in the record books in their respective events. Imani Moore recorded a high jump of 6.00m, good for sixth in program history and earned a spot in the finals of the event. Sofia Molina's time of 2:11.81 in the 800m was both a personal best and the third-best time in school history.
The list of other Eagles to set PRs is below:
Kennadi Reed, 100m Hurdles - 14.38
Euler, 400m - 56.78
Nia Hence, 100m - 11.86
The team will look to build off this performance as it returns to Statesboro for the Georgia Showdown on Apr. 6.
