Junior went 2-0 in singles with a win over nationally-ranked ODU to lead the Eagles
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern men's tennis junior Dimitris Paliouras has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Player of the Week, announced today by league officials.
Paliouras had a stellar week for the newly-ranked Eagles. The Thessaloniki, Greece, native went 2-0 in singles as Georgia Southern stretched its current win streak to five. He began the week with a 6-2, 6-2 win over JMU's Youssef Sadek on Saturday, helping the Eagles to a 4-0 win over the Dukes. Paliouras then followed that up with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over No. 111-ranked Connor van Schalkwyk of Old Dominion, sparking the Eagles to a 4-3 win over the then-No. 49 ranked Monarchs. It was Georgia Southern's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 1980.
In doubles, Paliouras teamed up with Pol del Castillo to knock off Agusti and Lozano of JMU on Saturday. This season, Paliouras is 10-3 in singles, including a 7-1 mark at the No. 1 spot, and he is currently riding a seven-match win streak in singles.
He is the second Georgia Southern student-athlete to earn men's tennis Player of the Week honors, joining sophomore Aaron James Williams, who was the league's honoree on March 13.
Paliouras and the Eagles are next in action on Saturday, visiting Coastal Carolina for a Sun Belt matchup at Noon in Conway, S.C.
