Men’s Golf Start Strong at the Schenkel Invitational

The Eagles tee off at 9 a.m. in tomorrow’s second round
STATESBORO – Parker Claxton carded his first career ace and the Georgia Southern men's golf team shot a 286 (-2) in the first round of the 44th playing of the Schenkel Invitational Friday at Forest Heights Country Club.
The Eagles sit in a tie for sixth place after one round. Middle Tennessee and Florida at -11 are tied for the lead.
Three Georgia Southern players shot 2-under-pars 70s to lead the way: Brantley Baker, Hayden Carner and Reece Coleman. Baker carded a team-high five birdies, including four in a row from holes 11-14. Carner and Coleman, along with Luke Dasher, all had four birdies. Dasher posted an eagle 3 on the seventh hole and Claxton recorded a hole in one on the third hole, coming on his birthday.
Middle Tennessee's Owen Stamper and Wisconsin's Daniel Aas both shot a 66 and lead the tournament by a stroke over NC State's Spencer Oxendine and Florida's Parker Ball.
As of March 13, 11 participating teams are ranked in the top 100 nationally, according to Clippd. Army West Point, Campbell, Florida (#17), Florida Gulf Coast (#54), Georgia Southern (#90), Kentucky (#67), Middle Tennessee (#78), Mississippi State (#25), NC State (#66), Notre Dame (#29), South Carolina (#58), UAB, West Virginia (#97) and Wisconsin (#96) make up the 14-team field.
Individually, eight competitors are ranked in Clippd'd top 100 in Kentucky's Alex Golf (#14), Florida's Ian Gilligan (#17), Mississippi State's Hunter Logan (#50), Florida's Tyler Wilkes (#60), Florida's Matthew Kress (#73), Mississippi State's Drew Wilson (#86), Wisconsin's Cameron Huss (#88) and South Carolina's Nathan Franks (#92).
Georgia Southern is the two-time defending champion and has won the event or finished runner-up in each of the last six times it was contested (2020 was canceled).
