PREVIEW: Eagles Open Sun Belt Play at Marshall

Georgia Southern opens Sun Belt Conference play this weekend traveling to Huntington, W.V. to take on Marshall at Dot Hicks Stadium in a three-game series beginning on Friday. The Eagles are 16-7 on the year after picking up a win, 3-2, against College of Charleston in Wednesday's midweek action. 

Delanie Thames leads the offense batting .371 with six runs batted in while also leading the team in on base percentage. Leadoff Emma Davis has appeared in all 23 games and is batting .358 with a team leading 24 hits and 18 runs. 
Georgia Southern finished 11th in the conference standings after going 6-18 in Sun Belt Play. 

LAST TIME OUT
Right hander Anslie Pettit tossed her seventh complete game of the season to pick up her seventh win of her freshman campaign. The Ball Ground, Ga. native tossed seven complete innings allowing two runs on two hits while striking out five. The Eagles scored two runs in the first inning when Gracie Bellard and Faith Barth plated the runs on an RBI single and sac fly. The Cougars would tie things up in the fifth but the Eagles quickly responded in the bottom of the frame when Janai Conklin recorded her second RBI of the season for the final score, 3-2. 

SERIES HISTORY WITH MARSHALL 
  • Friday's game marks the 28th meeting between the programs 
  • Marshall leads the series 7-20
  • Marshall swept the Eagles last season in a three-game conference series which was the first meeting between the programs in Sun Belt Conference play.  
  • The Eagles are looking for its first win against Marshall since taking a 7-3 in on April 5, 1997. 
SCOUTING THE THUNDERING HERD
Marshall comes into Sun Belt Conference play with a 14-11 overall record. The Thundering Herd picked up a midweek win against Ohio 9-2 on Tuesday after going 2-2 in the Marshall March Madness tournament. Marshall is led by senior shortstop Sydney Bickel who leads the Herd offense batting .429 including three home runs and three doubles while leading the team with 33 hits and a .511 on base percentage. Bub Feringa leads the pitching staff posting a 2.72 ERA in 18 appearances including 74.2 innings pitched and 30 strikeouts. Marshall was picked seventh in the Sun Belt preseason poll voted on by the league's coaches after finishing third last season. The Thundering Herd are led by first year head coach Morgan Zerkle.
