STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team is set to open Sun Belt Conference play against the Old Dominion Monarchs, beginning on Friday, March 15. First pitch from Bud Metheny Ballpark is set for 6 p.m.
Georgia Southern brings a 8-8 record into the game, riding a four-game win streak to climb back to .500. Southern swept Radford in the previous weekend series before taking a gritty victory over Kennesaw State on Tuesday night. Old Dominion carries a 10-7 record into the game after dropping a weekend series last weekend to Northeastern and splitting a midweek series with Princeton.
Georgia Southern holds a 4-3 lead in the all-time series with the Monarchs. Of the seven matchups, six have been in Statesboro, where the Eagles hold a 3-3 record. The other win comes in a neutral site meeting in the 1996 NCAA Atlantic Regional, where the third-seeded Eagles shut out the fourth-seeded Monarchs, 6-0. Last season, ODU won the first two games of a three game series in Statesboro before falling 16-0 in seven innings in the final game.
The Eagles hold a commanding record over all teams in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a 99-33 record. Of the 13 teams in Virginia, Southern has never played Norfolk State, Liberty, Longwood, or VCU. Notable records include 33-8 against former SoCon foe VMI, a 20-11 mark over Virginia Tech, 2-1 against UVA, and 13-5 against fellow SBC foe James Madison.
Georgia Southern carries the same rotation as it has all season, with righty
Thomas Higgins getting the ball on Friday, southpaw
Mitchell Gross taking the mound on Saturday, and lefty
Ty Fisher finishing the series on Sunday. Old Dominion has announced an all-lefty rotation, starting with Jay Cassady on Friday, Dylan Brown on Saturday, and Ben Moore on Sunday.
