Softball Drops Two On Day One of Bubly Invitational

Eagles return to action on Saturday against Florida and Loyola

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Georgia Southern softball team (4-3) dropped its first two contests of the Bubly Invitational on Friday losing to College of Charleston, 5-1, and Florida, 8-0. 

The Eagles are set  for two more games against Florida (7-1) and Loyola Chicago (5-0)  on Saturday for day two of the Bubly Invitational. First pitch of game one is at 8:00 a.m. against Loyola Chicago. 

GAME ONE - Georgia Southern 1, College of Charleston 5

College of Charleston struck first in the bottom of the first to go up, 1-0 when Aniz Roman led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch, advancing to third on back-to-back groundouts before scoring on a double to left field. 

The Cougars would stretch its lead in the third, 3-0. With the bases loaded, the Cougars drew a walk to score its first run of the inning then plated another on a base hit. The Eagles would cut into the deficit in the fourth as Jess Mazur recorded her second home run of the season to make it 3-1. 

The Cougars plated one run in the bottom of the fifth for the final run of the game. 

Starting pitcher Bailey Holland moves to 2-1 on the season after pitching 2.0 innings surrendering two runs on four hits with a strikeout. Alana Barnard came into relief tossing 4.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits. 

Jess Mazur led the offense going 2-for-3 while Emma Davis and Sam Vinson picked up the other two Eagle hits. 

GAME TWO – Georgia Southern 0, Florida 8

Florida got out to an early lead in the bottom of the first, scoring its first run of the contest on a sacrifice fly. The Eagle defense held steady in the second, seeing the minimum as Anslie Pettit recorded her first strikeout of the game. 

The Gators would go on to plate a run in every inning as the Eagles struggled to put hits together. A three-run home run in the sixth pushed the score out, 8-0, to end the contest. 

Katie Perkins and Jess Mazur were the only Eagles to record hits. 

Keagan Rothrock (3-1) earned the win in the circle, spinning a complete game allowing just two hits and fanning eight.
