STATESBORO– Georgia Southern volleyball (19-4, 9-3 SBC) officially cemented a perfect 14-0 home slate with a dominant sweep of in-state rival Georgia State (14-12, 5-9) on Saturday at Hanner Fieldhouse.
The Eagles honored their six seniors before the game -
Ashlyn Lovett,
Jillian Gray,
Jordan Christy,
Robin Rosser,
Logan Jones and
Paige Powers.
"We always talk about leaving it better than you found it, and that's something this group has done ever since they got here," head coach
Chad Willis said. "You look at where we are; a top 40 team in the country right now and of our goals in front of us… being a championship team and hopefully going the NCAA tournament. I said to them that their legacy isn't just what you leave behind, but what you leave in people, and their impact on the locker room has certainly been felt."
Georgia Southern hit a dominant .387 in set one to win 25-17. A pair of Panthers attack errors gave the home team a 6-1 early advantage.
Maggie Sale's successive kill and block put the Eagles up 19-13, which the team ran with after, winning on a kill by
Lydia Seymour.
The second set was more of the same as the Eagles hovered around a .500 hitting percentage for the majority. Starting 4-0, the team never looked back.
Lexi Duffy made an unbelievable one-handed save to set up Seymour for a kill to make it 22-13, and the Eagles closed the set with a
Reagan Barth kill to win 25-16.
The Panthers responded in the third set by leading as much as five, but the Eagles weren't done. Down 19-16, the Eagles went on a 6-1 run highlighted by three Barth kills and a Christy kill to take the lead back - closed by another Barth kill to wrap up a perfect 14-0 home season.
Barth's 17 kills led the way, hitting .630 on no errors and 27 attempts, a top-ten hitting performance in Eagles history minimum 12 kills.
Gray added 11 to round out the double-digit attackers as the Eagles hit .398 in the win - recording just six errors. The .398 mark was the team's best in a conference game in program history, breaking the previous record of .396 set against Troy on Oct. 3, 2014.
"Today was a total team effort, and we left it all out there," Gray said. "I'm so grateful for the opportunities that this program has given me and just supporting my growth on and off the court."
Lovett had 17 digs to pace the field with Gray adding 11 to pick up a double-double. Lovett will finish this season as one of the most prolific liberos in school history, placing second in digs and digs per set.
"This place is really special to me. If I could go back and tell my 16-year-old self to commit here right away, I would have done it," she said. "Recruiting is always stressful, but I thank God every day that I chose to come here, because this place has left me better than who I was before I found it, and I've just tried to do the same in return. I owe this program a lot, and I'm just glad that I could express how much I love volleyball to the crowd, to the fans, to all of our coaches, and just play for everyone around me."
The Eagles went 14-0 within the confines of Hanner Fieldhouse, their first undefeated season at home since 2003 (10-0) and their best home record in program history.
Georgia Southern will play its final two games of the regular season in Lafayette against Louisiana beginning next Thursday.
