Volleyball Falls in Four Sets at Coastal Carolina

Barrett records season-high 46 assists, Seymour contributes six blocks in the loss

CONWAY, S.C.– Georgia Southern volleyball (17-4, 7-3 SBC) has lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, losing in four sets to Coastal Carolina (11-13, 6-6) on Saturday.

Maggie Sale's solo block gave the Eagles an early 7-3 lead, and the Eagles never trailed in the opening set. Another Sale block made it 20-14, and Reagan Barth's kill fended off a late charge by the home team to win the first frame 25-21.

The Eagles held a narrow 13-11 advantage in the second set after a Paige Powers kill, but the Chants tied it back up at 16. A 4-0 run featuring a pair of Sale blocks made it 20-16.

Coastal responded with a crucial 6-0 run to lead 22-20. They held serve and won the set 25-22.

The third set got off to a rocky start, setting the tone for the remainder. An early 5-0 run by the home team put them up big. Despite Kayla Knowles coming in off the bench and recording two quick kills to get closer, trailing 12-7, the Eagles never got to within more than three, falling 25-17.

GS had a strong beginning to the fourth set looking for a comeback, leading 14-11 after back-to-back Logan Jones aces and a block by Lydia Seymour and Barth. A timeout by the Chants stopped momentum as they ran back in front for a 15-14 lead.

The teams traded points for the rest of the set. Kirsten Barrett had a kill and an ace to tie it at 23, however, the Chants sided out and won the point after to hand the Eagles their second loss in a row.

Barth (16), Gray (11) and Paige Powers (11) recorded double-digit kills, with Gray recording her second consecutive double-double by tying a career-high and leading the team with with 15 digs.

Barrett recorded a season-high 46 assists in the loss, surpassing 1,500 for her career, also adding five kills. Seymour led the Eagles with six blocks, and Sale added four solo.

Jones had three aces and 11 digs, and Knowles swung 3-of-6 off the bench in her first action since September.

Georgia Southern will play its final two home games of the regular season, matching up with Georgia State beginning on Friday night.
