SAN MARCOS, Texas - Host Texas State tallied three second-half goals to collect a 3-0 Sun Belt Conference women's soccer victory over Georgia Southern on Thursday evening, bringing the Eagles' 2024 season to a close.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 10-4-5 overall and 6-1-3 in the Sun Belt. Georgia Southern sees its season end with a 6-11-2 overall record and a 3-6-1 mark in the league, missing the Sun Belt tournament by a single point.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, with Texas State holding a 7-4 edge in shots. Quinn Wilson made three first-half saves in net, while Faith Phillips and Kyleigh Drew each notched shots on goal.
Texas State quickly took the lead in the second half as a cross from the right side was headed towards the left side of the box. Lily Erb settled the ball and finished high in the 48th minute for the 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats tallied a second goal less than four minutes later as Mady Soumare headed home a cross in the 52nd minute for the 2-0 advantage.
Soumare added a second goal on the night in the 64th minute on a counter attack following a free kick by the Eagles for the final margin.
Texas State outshot the Eagles 19-8 on the night. Wilson finished the match with seven saves in net for Georgia Southern, while Katelyn Chrisman made five saves in net for the Bobcats. Texas State held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks and the Bobcats were whistled for nine fouls and four offsides, compared to eight fouls and one offsides for the Eagles.
Georgia Southern loses six players to graduation - Ansleigh Crenshaw, Larsyn Reid, Kyleigh Drew, Faith Phillips, Smith Cathey and Maya Zovko - and will return 20 players for the 2025 campaign.
