Volleyball Drops Opener to Coastal Carolina

Barth records fifth consecutive double-double in the loss

CONWAY, S.C.– Georgia Southern volleyball (17-3, 7-2 SBC) dropped a tough contest on the road to Coastal Carolina (10-13, 5-6), falling in four sets on Friday.

The Eagles sprinted to a 4-1 lead, but Coastal came back to knot it at 8. Logan Jones notched back-to-back aces to go up 10-8 once more, but Coastal began to side out and led by as much as four.

Reagan Barth had a pair of kills to cap off a 4-0 run to take the lead back at 19-18, but a Chants timeout quelled the rally, winning the next four points en route to a 25-22 opening set win.

GS bounced back in a big way in the second set, hitting well over .300. Trailing 14-10, the Eagles went on an unconscious 11-1 run highlighted by four kills from Paige Powers. Barth chipped in a pair of kills to get to set point and a Chants error knotted the sets at 1-1.

A 6-0 run tied at 9-9 in the third set was all Coastal needed to run away with it. The Eagles made it close, but the home team ended victorious at 25-20.

Lydia Seymour's kill to make it 6-5 in set four was the final time the Eagles led in the match. Leading 20-17, Coastal went on a 5-0 run to snag the fourth set and win the opener 3-1 with the Eagles hitting an uncharacteristic .161.

Barth had a game-high 16 kills, while Jillian Gray added 15. Barth recorded her fifth consecutive double-double with 13 digs and Gray also added one with 10.

Kirsten Barrett notched a double-double with 43 assists and 12 digs, her sixth time reaching 40+ assists on the season - moving past Natalia Galantini for ninth all-time in program history with 1,496 assists.

The Eagles recorded 70 digs, with Ashlyn Lovett retaining her usual lead in the category at 18. Jones added another nine to the gaudy total.

Coastal Carolina has had the upper hand in program history against the Eagles, winning 26 of 29 and 12 of 14 historic meetings in Conway and winning for the fifth consecutive time.

GS will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
