NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Led by a pair of top-15 individual finishes, the Georgia Southern men's golf team put together its best three rounds of the young season to finish sixth out of 15 teams at the Fighting Irish Classic, hosted by Notre Dame at the Warren Golf Course.
On Sunday, the squad played two rounds in a driving wind, but still managed to shoot its lowest rounds of the season.
Parker Claxton and
Elijah Zamarron both posted 69s on the par 70 course with
Brantley Baker and
Brycen Jones shooting 72 each. In the second round, Baker posted an even-par 70 with six birdies to lead the way in tough conditions. Southern shot a 287 in round one, its lowest first round total of the year and shot a 286 in the second round, its lowest second round of the year.
On the final day
Edouard Cereto shot a 68, the lowest round by an Eagle on the day and for the tournament, to lead the squad to a 283 score. That total was the team's lowest third round total on the season by eight shots. Baker posted a 69 in the final round and both Claxton and Zamarron shot 72 apiece.
Baker finished one over for the tournament, good for a tie for a tie for 12th place. Claxton was one shot behind him and tied for 14th place. Cereto's strong final round vaulted him into a tie for 28th.
The sixth-place team finish is the highest finish for the Eagles this season and the 856 total score is 15 shots better than its previous best effort in three tournaments. The Eagles had 41 birdies, led by 12 from Baker.
Baker (211; +1) and Claxton (212, +2) both shot their best three-round total of the young season.
Words From Coach Carter Collins:
"During the journey of any season, three important keys to accomplishing your goals are growth, development and grit. We saw all three this week at Notre Dame. We were tested by weather, tough course conditions, and an elite field and the team did some great things. We are taking a ton of positives with us to our next event and can't wait to compete again. Hail Southern!"
