ATLANTA - Georgia State's Emily Glenn scored in the 88th minute to give the host Panthers a 2-1 Sun Belt Conference women's soccer victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Thursday evening at the GSU Soccer Complex in Atlanta.
The Panthers (3-7-6, 2-2-4 SBC) notched a second straight win with the victory, while Georgia Southern fell to 6-10-1 overall and 3-5 in the league. The Eagles return to Statesboro on Sunday, hosting Southern Miss in a Noon contest at Bo Pitts Field that will also be Senior Day for Georgia Southern.
Georgia State struck first in the 22nd minute as a long ball from the Panthers settled in between forward Aaliyah Faddoul and Georgia Southern keeper Katie Oakley. Faddoul's first touch on the ball got past Oakley and rolled into the net for the 1-0 lead.
The Panthers would take that lead into the break, holding a 7-3 edge in shots at halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles' Smith Cathey earned a penalty kick in the 72nd minute by drawing a foul in the box. Her stutter-step finish beat Georgia State goalkeeper Jaddah Foos right for the match tying goal, the eighth of the season for Cathey.
Another long ball by the Panthers would give Georgia State the victory, this time from Brook Nelson over the top of the Eagle defense to Emily Glenn, who finished in the 88th minute. A video review for a possible offsides on the play would not be enough to overturn the call and the Panthers would claim the victory.
Shots were even at 10-all in the contest. Foos made four saves in net for the Panthers, while Oakley made one save in net for the Eagles. Georgia Southern held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks and the Eagles were whistled for 10 fouls and three offsides, compared to just five fouls and one offsides for the Panthers.
