BOONE, N.C.- Georgia Southern volleyball (15-2, 5-1 SBC) used an unconscious performance from middle blocker
Lydia Seymour to bounce back from a loss and take down App State (10-7, 4-2) in four sets on Saturday.
"It was a total team effort. Yesterday was a tough five-set battle," head coach
Chad Willis said. "We did a lot of really good things statistically, but ultimately came up short in some key stretches and key opportunities. To turn around and grab a road win against a quality App team, I am proud of the team for bouncing back and staying the course."
An early run by the Mountaineers allowed them to pull away in set one despite the Eagles going up 2-0. The Eagles fought to make it close but never tied the game up, falling 25-23 in the first frame.
The second set was tooth and nail for each team early on, but the Eagles were the first to 15, leading 15-10 after a
Sam Bowron ace. Down 20-18, App came back to take the lead, but the Eagles clawed back. Battling back to 24-23,
Reagan Barth closed the set out with a kill.
GS sprinted to an early advantage in the third frame.
Jillian Gray put the team up 7-3 with a kill, and one by
Kirsten Barrett gave the Eagles a 15-10 advantage following that.
The home team made it close, getting to within one, but the Eagles eventually pulled it out 25-21 after consecutive attack errors, highlighted by one of five
Lydia Seymour blocks. GS hit .400 during the set.
Using a 6-0 run early to take hold, highlighted by a one-handed stuff by Barrett to go up 12-6, GS never wavered in the fourth frame. Hitting .303, the Eagles led by as much as eight. Seymour and Gray combined on a block to win the final set 25-18 and bounce back from their second loss of the season.
Seymour was paramount to the Eagles' success against the Mountaineers, hitting a gaudy .706 with no errors and a career-best 12 kills, contributing five blocks. She became the first Eagle to hit over .700 on 10 or more attempts since Baylor Bumford on 9/19/22.
"We know it's all in front of us, and we're in the driver's seat," Seymour said. "We always tell each other that the Sun Belt runs through Statesboro, and I think that's what we kept in mind."
Barth (14 kills, 10 digs) and Gray (14 kills, 10 digs) mimicked each other's stat lines to nab double-doubles.
Ashlyn Lovett had 15 digs to lead the way, and Barrett added 38 assists, 4 kills, 6 digs and a block.
Willis recorded his 83rd win as Georgia Southern head coach, tying him with J.B. Claiborne (1988-93) for third all-time as head man of the Eagles.
The Eagles will head home first in the East with a 5-1 record. The team will take on James Madison for a big Sun Belt series on Friday.
