Women's Tennis Off To 2-0 Start After Blanking Bethune-Cookman Sunday

Eagles notch a 7-0 win over a short-handed Wildcats squad

Box Score

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - Georgia Southern women's tennis completed a perfect opening weekend by blanking a short-handed Bethune-Cookman squad, 7-0, on Sunday morning in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Eagles improved to 2-0 on the season with the win, the first 2-0 start for Georgia Southern since 2018. Bethune-Cookman (0-1) drops its season-opener.

The Wildcats were only able to play five players in the match, so the Eagles earned walkover wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

Georgia Southern claimed the doubles point as Silvia Martinez and Sonja Keranen defeated Allexii Bassette and Jalayah Shaw, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles. Mackenzie Leopold and Sophie Wagemaker then earned a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles over Loncey Elie and Janet Imbo Nloga.

The Eagles then claimed straight-set wins in the five competed singles matches to collect the sweep.

"Today's match with Bethune-Cookman was a very important moment for us to be able to work on a number of things," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Most importantly, our mental game and being able to deal with extreme cold and windy conditions. Things we are simply unable to control and then finding a calm within oneself to keep our composure during challenging moments. I know the women are happy to begin the season 2-0. We have so much season and work left in front of us and I can feel a level of dedication, passion and eagerness each of the women and  staff have towards improving and developing their game all around."
