Volleyball Wins in Straight Sets, Sweeps Weekend From Old Dominion

In the match, GS held ODU to a .132 hitting percentage, continuing its run of success in that category

NORFOLK, Va.– Georgia Southern volleyball (13-2, 3-1 Sun Belt) closed out September on a high note, cruising to a weekend sweep of Old Dominion (9-9, 1-3 SBC) winning 25-23, 25-15, 25-18 on Saturday.

"Great result today, proud of our group for turning around and executing the game plan," head coach Chad Willis said. "We talked about being more physical at the net and staying in control of first contact, which set a tone early in all three sets. Energy and focus was great all weekend especially embracing a battle mentality on the road to open up division play."

In a hard-fought first set, the Eagles eventually came out on top. Starting with a 5-1 run, a common theme for the visitors on the afternoon, the Eagles earned a 25-23 win. Though the Monarchs made it close, an ODU attack error at 24-23 gave GS the set win.

The Eagles flew through the second set again, going up as much as 19-6 before the home team could settle in. Holding Old Dominion to a paltry .029 hitting percentage, the Eagles won 25-15 on an Ally Barnhart kill.

After previously being held in check for most of the match, Reagan Barth came to life in the third, recording seven of her 11 kills to lead the Eagles to a 25-18 win and 3-0 sweep of Old Dominion.

The Eagles hit .293 in the final frame, their best set performance of the afternoon. Back-to-back kills by Jordan Christy closed out the Monarchs.

Barth's 11 kills led the Eagles, and Jillian Gray notched nine of her own in the victory. The Eagles recorded eight aces in the game, with Ailie Hair serving three of them. Hair, Gray and Barnhart each had four block assists to their credit.

The Eagles now sit at 13-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play, moving into third place in the Sun Belt East division.

Georgia Southern returns home for a date with 4-0 Coastal Carolina on Friday at 6:00.
